Springs Wheelers prepare for Ride for Sight race

The Springs Wheelers cycling team is preparing to assist and ride at the 28th annual Ride for Sight cycle race on February 14.

The Ride for Sight cycle race is a 116km Super Classic road race starting at the Boksburg City Stadium.

There will also be 62km Vita-thion Challenge cycle race for novice cyclists.

Springs Wheelers’ cyclists will be on hand to assist with the loading of cyclists, grouping the participants in their strength group and some of the club’s members will be participating in the race.

Raymond van Deventer (40) of the Springs Wheelers cycling team says,”We are expecting between 5 000 and 7 000 cyclists to take part in this event.”

Some local cyclists are training for the event and cycled a 80km distance on Saturday.

The aim of the race is to restore the gift of sight and so far the event has raised over R5-million towards finding treatment for retinal blindness.

“The Springs Wheelers team feel passionate about this initiative and participate as often as they can,”says Raymond.

He adds, “There are many prizes up for grabs so we urge people to participate.”

The race will start and end at the stadium.

The retina is a layer of tissue in the back of your eye that senses light and sends images to your brain and retinal diseases affect this vital tissue, leading to possible blindness.

“This race is important to us and everyone involved in order to find the treatment,” says Raymond.

Online entries to participate in the race close on February 1.
