New power station in Delmas

The Department of Environmental Affairs approved the construction of a power station near Delmas last Thursday.

The power station is expected to create job opportunities for both Delmas and Springs residents.

Anelle Lötter, environmental consultant for KiPower, says although the construction of the power station will probably only start in 2017, it is a great way of creating employment.

“The power station will be able to burn poor quality coal,” says Lötter.

Construction of the power plant will cost about R18-million and the KiPower power station will generate 600 MW of electricity and supply electricity to Eskom’s power network.

Lötter says KiPower must still do environmental impact studies to link the power lines from the power station with those of Eskom’s network.

The company’s studies show that one-million litres of water will be used each day during the construction of the power station.

Lötter says KiPower already started Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) studies in 2012.

After completion of these studies the Department of Environmental Affairs approved the EIA and the atmospheric emissions license.

The EIA is currently in an appeal phase, where stakeholders have until November 6 to indicate whether they will appeal against the approval.
