Exciting CrossFit challenge

Five Springs fitness fanatics competed in the national CrossFit Last Man Standing competition which was held recently in Pretoria.

Twenty-year-old Dylan Viljoen (the head coach of the CrossFit Shock Club), Paul Riadi (28), Charmain Esterhuizen (36) and Jéan Benadi (24) competed in the event and represented the club.

Another athlete from the club, Tewie ‘TJ’ Alberts (24), was a judge at the competition.

“CrossFit is constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity,” explains Dylan.

The four athletes made it through to the semi-finals with Paul continuing to the finals.

Dylan says Paul narrowly missed the top three.

The competition was all about workouts and started off with double under skipping, followed by a 30kg slam ball contest.

Dylan says they had to pick up the slam ball and throw it over their shoulders, with each individual repeating this exercise 40 times.

Workout three involved 50kg dumbbells.

“This means each athlete had to hold a dumbbell in each hand, squatting, then getting up and lifting the weights above your head and down again, repeating the exercise,” he says.

An interesting event was the gymnastic rings which they had to use to pull themselves up.

Lastly, the athletes had to carry a 90kg tyre for about 100m.

Dylan says the three days were worth every minute and he is very proud of this athletes.
