Wessel and Ivan aim high

Combat Zone Kickboxing Club is proud of its two senseis who excelled at the recent Northern Classics kickboxing competition.

The competition was held at the Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre in Kibler Park.

In the veterans challenge, Sensei Wessel Marais (53), the head coach of the club, received a silver medal on points in his fight against Allan Visagie from the Tebbut’s Academy in Germiston.

The club entered 22 students who brought home around 40 medals.

These students come from the Springs, Eloff and Nigel clubs, and are instructed by senseis Wessel Marais and his son Ivan Marais (18).

The age of the fighters varies between five and 45 years and they competed in the high kick and several other fighting divisions.

In the high kick division Ivan kicked higher than 2.4m.

“His kicking skills impressed the judges and other fighters,” says Wessel.

Wessel will compete in the Destiny Championships in Cape Town in October and in the Carousel fighting event in November.

Students practice on Mondays and Wednesdays between 6.30pm and 8pm.

Anyone interested in joining the club can contact Wessel on 071 325 6738.
