Telly Tubbies conquer all

The Astro Outdoor Football facility in Bakerton held their fourth league game of the season on Monday night.

The Balo Telly Tubbies team faced the Detailer Car Wash team and fought for first place.

Seven teams participate in the league games.

The games last 40 minutes, 20 minutes on each side.

Balo Telly Tubbies won 7 – 1 against Detailer Car Wash which put them in first place with Detailer Car Wash close on their heels in second place.

The We Not Fit team played against Columbia and won 8 -7.

Ahmed Chouglay, chairman of the Springs Multi Sports Arena, says they have three different league games during the season.

There is the Monday night Super League, Tuesday Champions League and the Wednesday Premium League for players 35 years and over.

“This early in the season, we can already see teams fighting for first and second place and the games are getting more intense,” says Ahmed.

The referees are all from Eastern Gauteng and have no links to any clubs.

“The reason we have the referees is that we want the standard of football to be the best.”

Ahmed says the football at Astro has become a norm to their community where the community is getting very involved with the games.

He also says that their football at Astro is very competitive in comparison to other centres around the country.

“We have selected a team from our Astro turf and played in various different towns and we have won all our games thus far,” he adds.

“Various towns who have played here have praised our sports arena, saying it is the best they’ve played on.”

Besides the local teams, they also get the Ethiopian, Somalian and Malawian teams who play in their arenas.

“We are now hosting a massive tournament from March 20 to 22 where we have invited 12 teams and response has been very good.”

“We’ve got confirmation from Cape Town to participate in our tournament.”

Ahmed also adds that the Astro turf is not only for Bakerton residents, but for the whole community of Springs and neighbouring towns.

All seven teams will play the Monday night league next week.

“We have social games on Fridays and Saturdays,” says Ahmed.
