Radio controlled flight hobby

Robert Rositzky (49), a senior instrument technician in Springs, has had a love for radio controlled airplanes since his childhood days.

He has been part of the Umbila Radio Flyers of Springs for seven years and is very passionate about this hobby of his.

Robert was SA champion in 1985 for radio controlled cars at the age of 20, although he has always had a love for radio controlled airplanes.
The Umbila Radio Flyers Club has around 70 members who fly their airplanes almost every Saturday and Sunday, depending on the weather.
“The bug bit about 40 years ago when I went to the airfield with my dad and saw the people flying their radio controlled airplanes,” says Robert.
He adds that the great part about this hobby is that it is very much tuned in with family life.
“Christmas time we would fill the airplanes with all sorts of sweets and as they fly, the children are bombarded with sweet things from above.”
Robert used to be a co-owner of a shop in Selection Park that sells these airplanes and spare parts, but sold his shares to his partner.
“This is a sport for everyone to enjoy and makes a great outing with the family,” he says.
