Stealers close game on high note

Springs Stealers travelled to Weltevreden Park to play against Bombers on Sunday.

Although Stealers have had quite a difficult go of it this season, they are currently lying in fourth place in the league.

They started off batting and began well, scoring five runs as Bombers’ pitcher, Ryno Pretorius, struggled with his pitch location.

He hit one batter and walked two, with runs scoring on hits from David Williams, Chris Stone and a double from Leon Tancrel.

Richard Williams was on the mound for Stealers and the first innings went past in a flash as the first three hitters came up and went down by strikeout, groundout and caught fly ball.

Bombers’ woes continued as Stealers got another four runs from another walk, another hit batter, two fielding errors and a sacrifice fly. Bombers struggled to hit successfully but managed to score one run from two hits with the score now 9-1 to Stealers.

With their opponents on the field Stealers had their first shorter batting innings only scoring one run from one hit and a fielder’s choice. Bombers replied with a run of their own raising the score to 10-2.

Stealers pushed on with another two runs in the top of the fourth as Bombers swapped out their pitcher for Greg De Villiers. Bombers answered with two runs of their own from two hits bringing the score to 12-4.

Top of the fifth and Stealers batted in another run from two hits and another sacrifice fly. Bombers had no answer as they were quickly dispatched with two strikeouts and a caught stealing.

Stealers took to the bat and brought in another five runs off five singles, another hit batter and two walks.This put the score at a formidable 18-4. Bombers fought back with three runs of their own from three singles and a double. Stealers in their last batting could only further their lead by one more run leaving Bombers to come up with an answer.

Stealers closed the game only allowing them one more run and a final score of 19-8.

Stealers face Mix and Match, currently in third placed in the league at Springs Old Boys’ at 10am, on Sunday.
