Bowling for a good cause

Family and friends, including old members of Springs Old Boys (SOB) Club, tried their hands at bowls at the social bowls fun day held at the club on Sunday.

The day started at 9am, when all the teams were on the greens, playing for a social fundraising win.

The greens were marked so each team knew exactly which Jack to bowl towards.

Gavin Jurgens, organiser of the event, says the old members have wonderful memories of the club and when they heard about the club’s difficulties, they decided to host a combined fundraising effort.

Proceeds of the day will be split 50/50 between Old Boys club and the HHJ Tiger Fishing Club.

Some of the ex-Old Boys members belong to the fishing club.

Gavin adds Old Boys was a wonderful, active and well established club where he was a club member for about 20 years.

In commemoration of the fishing club’s 10 year celebrations all ex-members of the SOB and their families jumped in to make this a memorable and well supported event.

The winning team received a roast as first prize, the second prize was a biltong hamper and four suckers were given to the worst team of the day.

Fires were lit shortly after all the teams finished playing bowls.

The men stood around the fires with their families’ braai packs which were included in the price of the day.

Two members of the famous 70s Springs rock band Radio Rats entertained the crowd.

Guitarist Ozzie Theron and Dave Davies on vocals played some of their famous songs.

A Corporate Bowls Fundraising Day is being planned for later in the year to raise more funds.

The date of the event will be announced in due time.
