Alexia at SA lifesaving

She was chosen for the Eastern Gauteng Lifesaving team

In only a short time of starting lifesaving, Alexia Antoniades was chosen for the Eastern Gauteng team.

Alexia has been swimming for years, but decided last year to switch to lifesaving.

She is member of Blackfin Swimming Club where she is coached by Bronwyn Cummings, who represented South Africa several times in lifesaving.

To be selected for the Eastern Gauteng team, Alexia had to build up points during the season including several prescribed requirements and events where she had to participate.

At the South African Lifesaving Championships held recently in Bloemfontein there were items with different obstacles they had to complete, as well as dam swimming races, individual board races and the ‘iron lady’ competition that consists of running, swimming and board racing.

Competing in the U/17 age group, Alexia came fourth in this iron lady competition at the SAs, as well as fourth in the board race and third in the individual board race. She and her team of three others, were also fourth in the relay race.

Alexia plans to continue doing lifesaving wherever she studies next year, as she is writing matric this year.

She enjoys this sport because of the different aspects to it and it has a lot of team work.
