On the road

Two cycling friends were seen on Sunday during a practice run in Pollok Park.

Jomo Beibi and Nathi Mafu have been friends for a long time and they practice together for upcoming races.

“We both work during the week and do not have time to practice, therefore weekends are the best times to do so,” says Jomo.

Jomo lives in Pollok Park and Nathi joined him on Sunday for a 120km practice.

A New State Areas resident, Nathi, comes to his friend’s house to get ready for their weekly practice sessions.

They like practising together and have been participating in races for the past four years.

Although these two cyclists do not belong to any club in particular, they love cycling.

“We are not professionals, but this is the best fun ever and we would like to motivate other people from our culture to take up cycling,” says Jomo.

Nathi says people think it is only a white man’s sport and an expensive hobby, but once you have your bike and the gear, you are off.

“The bikes and gear are not even that costly,” he says.

The Pollok Park resident says it is the best way to lose weight and to get fit.

Both cyclists say it is a lot of fun, but it does take a lot of commitment.
