Dads with a purpose

Dads Cycling race with a purpose raised R400 000 in aid of charity.

A group of 39 riders covered 670kms over five days accompanied by a support group of seven people.

They departed from Carnival City recently to Standerton, then to Newcastle, from Escourt to Pietermaritzburg and then to Durban.

“The first two days were very hot with temperatures of up to 41°, but luckily the last day was cool,” says Roy.

The final leg marked the culmination of the cycle challenge when the team competed in the 106km Amashovashova Cycle Challenge from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

“The Amashovashova is the oldest classical cycle race in the country and it was quite tough. My legs were very sore, but although we experienced extreme weather conditions, it was still for a worthy cause,” says Roy.

The aim of the race was to raise R400 000 and the cyclists have done just that. The funds will be divided predominantly between The Sunflower Fund, Fulton School for the Deaf, the Gauteng Down Syndrome Association and The Choc Children Cancer Foundation.

Roy adds it is more or less the same riders every year and four of the guys have done all nine rides.

“Next year will be the 10th celebration and we are very excited about it. Financial support is growing and we are very grateful, but we hope it will increase next year,” said Roy.
