Matriculant shares her thoughts on the future

Shamaine Saira writes:

I’m a Grade 12 learner and my future has been on my mind.I am beginning to have second thoughts about my career choice.

Matrics are anxious, scared and emotional and we are doing everything to keep our head right, but it isn’t enough.

My heart bleeds as I am part of the Class of 2020.

March 18 marked our last normal day of school, which was influenced by the lockdown announced by the president.

The lives of matriculants and the rest of learners changed into an unknown and fearsome future.

In all honesty, online studying and working has been challenging for most matric learners.

Our parents have to balance putting food on the table and buying data.

Our academics have taken a knock because of this.

I understand that timing is very important and sometimes God will delay us just before we reach our goal, and this strategic delay is meant to protect us and prepare us for what is to come.

I know sometimes it may not feel like it, but we are indeed part of the chosen class for such a time as this.

I wish someone could tell me and the rest of the matrics that they know the path forward.

I am not saying some schools are not safe or my school is not safe, teachers and government are trying their best.

However, we are not going to catch the virus at school, but on our way to school.

That’s why everything is terrifying because you never know what to expect and no one asks to get infected, it just happens.

There is so much uncertainty.

I know we are heading into an uncertain future and everyone says things will not be the same as they were before, but I know they will be better because when we go through challenges we learn about who we are and what we value in our life.

Whatever the world looks like in 10 or 20 years, part of that is up to you.So these past few months, we have had to reach even higher.

We weren’t just adjusting to a virtual classroom, we were helping our teachers adjust their audio so the rest of the class could hear.

We weren’t just taking classes online, we were making sure our siblings have enough time on the computer too, to do their work.

I just wasn’t hanging out with my friends in that group chat, we were supporting each other through all this uncertainty and loss.

I’m encouraging my fellow high school seniors to allow themselves to be disappointed about what they’re missing and still be grateful about what they do have right now.

Class of 2020, change has started and it starts with us.
