This was one of those movies that was either going to be great or awful and I’m pleased to say it was a great caper which will be enjoyable for the whole family.

The film has received a number of negative reviews but if you’re watching purely for entertainment and don’t take the giant animals too seriously, this is the perfect watch for a lazy weekend.

Primatologist Davis Okoye is a man who keeps people at a distance but shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, incredibly rare albino silverback gorilla who has been in his care since he rescued the young orphan from poachers.

But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates this gentle ape into a raging creature of enormous size.

The problems start when the experiment, which is being conducted in outer space, results in lab rats growing to enormous proportions and taking over the ship.

The lone person on board manages to get into the safety pod and propels herself off the main ship but not before the rat has cracked the windshield causing the pod to explode.

Research matter from the pod lands in George’s enclosure infecting him with the mutation.

To make matters worse, it’s soon discovered there are other similarly altered animals.

As these newly created alpha predators tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with discredited geneticist Kate Caldwell to secure an antidote.

They must fight their way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once Okoye’s friend.

The action moves swiftly and is, provided you don’t think too hard about the science, a fun watch.

There are a number of slapstick moments between Okoye and George making for lighter moments which work purely because one of them is not human.

I enjoyed Rampage, despite all the criticisms and recommend it for couples or families that have diverse tastes.

It certainly isn’t a chick flick but neither is it a hard-hitting action, making it the perfect compromise.
