Choosing a first-time dog

After living dogless for more than two years, it's all about to change at the end of this month.

Being petless for so long has been an incredibly sore point for me, being the intense animal lover that I am.

It has not been out of choice, but circumstance.

Living in a complex which doesn’t allow pets of any species has been my lot for too long.

But alas! We have found a new home, also in a complex which differs by only two words…

Pet friendly! Hallelujah!

I am finally able to adopt my new baby and I am so excited I simply cannot wait.

Every time I now see a doggy, I’m thinking to myself, “Maybe I should get one of these” and then I see another and I’m starting to contemplate how many animals I can get away with at the new place because I want one of each.

Being realistic, I know I can only have one, which sucks, but I’m still grateful because it’s still better than what I can have now.

Now comes the incredibly daunting challenge… having to choose a breed.

Having loved big dogs my entire life, I grew quite fond of the smaller canines and will have to pick a small breed as we will still be in a complex and a larger dog may be problematic.

Having made that first step in the decision-making process, the rest came to a screeching halt.

I googled it and… do you have any idea how many small canines there are?!

How does one choose?

My other half likes these Jack Russell type dogs a lot and I have to admit that I do too, they’re energetic, playful and very clever.

But then, they are probably the naughtiest breed out there and I’m already imagining getting home to the dog having chewed a hole through the wall to get inside or something.

So that’s still in the ‘Maybe’ section.

Then I thought about getting a chihuahua… those small ones with eyes larger than their heads, but I’m afraid of losing it in the couch somewhere, so no.

I’ve always liked a miniature fox terrier as well, very similar to a Jack Russell, so the jury is still out on that one.

This will be the very first time I get to pick a dog which I will own and that lives with me (in my bed) so I’m very picky on this one.

It boggles my mind how other people do it so easily.

I will just have to visit the Springs SPCA and see what breeds they have to choose from, that will make it a little easier.
