A lifetime legacy

A dedicated Springsite writes:

With Nelson Mandela Day fever in the air, I couldn’t help but wonder what it means about the spirit of kindness, giving and forgiveness.

I wonder why people wait for this particular day to start showing they care about the community or certain causes.

Shouldn’t the spirit of the late Nelson Mandela live within us and be the way in which we lead our lives on a daily basis?

I often wonder what we would attribute such acts and days of kindness to, if it wasn’t for the legacy left by Nelson Mandela.

We need to do our 67 minutes by fully immersing ourselves in the acts we are performing, making them a part of our consciousness and being.

It is not enough to do our ‘bit’ for Mandela Day, but fail to do our ‘bit’ on a daily basis.

The one thing I understand and take from Nelson Mandela Day, and his legacy, is that kindness, forgiveness and caring for others are all about character.

That is what the late legend embodied – character and a heart for people.

I hope that, while people commemorate Nelson Mandela Day, they also take in the intrinsic lesson such a day teaches.

More importantly, I hope the spirit of ubuntu becomes a way of life and a state of being for many.

Let us give back to those who need it, but let us not forget to make it a lasting legacy.
