Residents remember the good old days

I have lived in Springs for 70 years and have seen changes in the town, unfortunately all for the worse.

I remember some of the places that were in Springs when my parents moved from Primrose to Springs.

First I remember the police station and Publix Store, the CNA, all in Third Street.

There was also Wellingtons, the dried fruit shop and near it Melodys music shop, also in Third Street.

Epstein’s, Dales furniture shop, the Receiver of Revenue offices in Second Street.

The Old Mutual building in Fourth Avenue, and the Lion Hotel in Third Avenue.

There are also people that I remember.

Miller Davies (stockbroker), Courtney Redhill (still well-known), Dr Karstead (district surgeon), Dr Bam, George Sutter MP, Len Taurog MP, Mr Epstein, Mr Murry (Standard Bank manager), Mr Budge (Standard Bank teller), Mrs Taylor (blind woman who manned the municipal switchboard), Eric Holland (the driver of the steam train that went from Springs to Nigel).

Also the railway line that went from Springs crossed over West Springs Road, and over a bridge across the Nigel railway line and on to the mines on the West of Springs.

Most of all I remember the Rose Festival with the Rose Queen, and the motor bike races up and down Nigel Road.

Not to mention all the mine recreation halls at Springs mine, Vogels, Vlakfontein and East Geduld where dances and receptions were held.
