Join our celebration

There are changes afoot at The Springs Advertiser and we are getting excited to share these with you.

As regular readers will be aware, the paper is celebrating 100 years in the community in May and plans for making this a memorable year are well under way.

As we enter a new century, the Advertiser will celebrate our birthday with a brand new, dynamic look to keep our readers interested and intrigued.

While we aren’t ready to tell you about these changes, or show you what we have in mind, we would love to hear your predictions for the new century at the paper.

Let us know what you hope the paper will look like by making suggestions on our Springs Advertiser Facebook page.

We also have a host of fun activities and challenges running this year.

  • For those of you looking to show off your favourite parts of Springs and your photography skills, we are currently running a photographic competition which seeks to put Springs’ best foot forward and remind residents what it is they love about their city.

The competition is open to all our readers and the prize is a photo course sponsored by Foto Chaps.

For more information on how to enter, see the story on page 17 of this issue.

  • Schools and their pupils are invited to help our Addie piggy Bridget find (or make) her family.

To create a host of piggy friends and family for Bridget, cover a plastic (or any other material) piggy bank in paper mâché and decorate your creation.

This competition is open to schools and individuals living and attending school in Springs and KwaThema.

More details and a video of how to make paper mâché are available on our website.

  • We are also looking for Springsites’ favourite recipes to be published in the paper between May and October.

Send your recipes to me at samk@caxton.co.za for inclusion in our Springs’ Top 100 Recipe feature which will showcase one starter, two main courses and one dessert each week.

  • Of course no birthday year would be complete without a celebration and this year’s Wheels and Wings is set to be better than ever before.

Our biennial fun day will be held at the Springs Airfield on September 10.

Once again visitors will enjoy good music, a show by the EMPD dog unit which was a crowd favourite in 2014, a host of interesting stalls and the highlight of the day, our Rainbow Run – a fun run complete with colour.

The entry fee for the Wheels and Wings will again be non perishable food which will be donated to charities in Springs and KwaThema.

We still have plenty of space for more stalls and look forward to inviting all Springsite’s to either show their wares or support those doing so.

If you would like to set up a stall, contact Izahn van Huyssteen on 011 812 4828 or izahnv@caxton.co.za for a booking form.

  • The Rainbow Run will be held as part of the Wheels and Wings day and will be run along the inside perimeter of the airfield.

The Springs Striders have come on board to marshal the event and ensure a safe fun run for all.

Although this is part of a larger event, there will be an entry fee for the run which will cover the cost of the paint you will use during the Rainbow Run.

The ticket cost will include three packets of paint and a white T-shirt to be worn during the fun run to ensure your clothes do not get ruined.

Watch out for more details on the Rainbow Run, where to buy tickets and how much these will cost
