You don’t need to be an animal lover to respect life

I enjoyed reading last week's column about the 'Onnodige dood van diere' and couldn't agree with the writer more.

I travel from Nigel to Springs and vice versa every day and I am astounded at the amount of dead animals I come across so often and more appalled that they are just left there.

I truly feel it is disgusting to leave a dead animal on the road like that and thought that humanity has evolved more than that.

It breaks my heart to see how animals are just left for dead and I shudder to think if those animals even died on impact and how they must have experienced a cruel death.

It will not hurt anyone to keep an extra vigilant eye out for stray animals who may wander at the side of the road, even less so to not speed like a maniac which doesn’t allow you to swerve out for the animal on time.

And if the worst does happen and an animal is hit, do not just drive off like a criminal, stop and assess the damage.

If the animal is dead, drag it to the side of the road and alert the relevant authorities.

This will also avoid other accidents.

If the animal is alive and in pain, again, contact the necessary authorities immediately (such as the SPCA) – it really is not so hard.

You don’t need to be an animal lover to respect life.
