Most upsetting news on cemetery

The leading story in the Addie, (Geduld Cemetery is set to be demolished, Advertiser, January 14), is most upsetting.

Also, the council does not answer a query as to whether the graves and tombstones in the Geduld Cemetery will be demolished or not.

Any structure, if it is more than 60 years old, cannot be demolished without special permission from the Heritage Agency.

The old building, which was partly burnt, can be rebuilt into a security centre, which will make it much safer for people who visit their family’s graves.

I, for one, have family who were buried there from 1936 onwards.

The council should take into consideration the number of ghosts who will haunt them if any graves are destroyed.

Just because the cemetery is no longer in use, it does not mean that the folk who are buried there have nobody who still cares for them.

Perhaps there are members of the council who have a financial interest in the removal of the cemetery?

Some of them might want the land to be rezoned for housing or commercial use, one never knows.

I dare say there would be plenty of thokoloshes who would appear.

Peter Denton.
