No to women abuse

August is known as women's month, but what does this really mean.

Reading newspapers, listening to radio news and watching news on TV this month, we hear more about celebrations happening all over the country about women’s month.

The one question that I have is, if the citizens of this country are so much aware of the women’s month then why do we still hear stories about women abused by their husbands, young girls abused by their uncles, brothers and fathers.

Does this mean that there are still people who do not understand or undermine the rights of women?.

In my own opinion I think that the government and the community need to work together to ensure that all the citizens are educated about the rights of the women including children.

The abusers need to understand the value of women and be reminded about the role that women played to fight against the pass laws.

The truth is everyone needs to take a responsibility to protect women and children in this country irrespective of the month of the year.

Other women who are in abusive relationships only get a break from abuse by those close to them in August but on the first of September the abuse starts again.

We need to stop talking about not turning a blind eye towards abuse but take action to protect the victims and report abuse to the police.

The other way to fight against abuse towards women is that the abused need to reach out for help and talk about abuse.

Remember one does not ask to be abused but it is a crime that can happen to anyone at any time.
