Operation clamps down on illegal firearm

The Ekurhuleni District Office Intelligence, together with the Springs SAPS Crime Prevention Unit, arrested a 20-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at the Everest Informal Settlement on Tuesday.

A 20-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Tuesday at Mponeng Street, Everest informal settlement.

The arrest was a joint intelligence-driven operation by the Ekurhuleni District Office Intelligence and the Springs SAPS Crime Prevention Unit after receiving a tip-off from the community.

Ekurhuleni police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela said upon arrival, the officers questioned the man about the firearm and he denied having one.

“The police officers searched his premises and found a black Mauser 7.65 firearm inside a bin containing rice,” said Sekgobela.

“They also found five live rounds of ammunition hidden in the container.”

The man was detained at the Springs Police Station, and he will soon appear at the Springs Magistrate’s Court.

Ekurhuleni District Commissioner Major General Anna Sithole thanked the members for their relentless efforts in recovering unlicensed firearms to ensure that criminals don’t have space to breathe in Ekurhuleni.
