Trucks stolen in Springs recovered in Alex

JMPD officers arrested suspected hijackers in Alexandra on August 29.

JMPD officers arrested suspected hijackers in Alexandra on August 29. The officers had received information about trucks stolen in an armed robbery in Springs. Also stolen were meat products.

According to Superintendent Xolani Fihla, the spokesperson for the JMPD, officers doing crime prevention patrols in Alexandra noticed men offloading meat from a bakkie into a butchery.

“The men attempted to flee the scene when the officers approached them,” said Fihla.

Two men were immediately apprehended.

“One of them divulged information leading to his residence in Alexandra where, among other stolen items, officers recovered five unlicensed firearms, one licensed firearm, ammunition, and a signal jammer.

“All the items recovered, including the vehicle used in the commission of the crime, were seized, and the firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to determine if they were involved in the commission of crime,” he added.

In the incident in Springs earlier that morning, around 03:30 a security guard noticed a gold-coloured Polo stopped in front of the gates at the abattoir where he works.

According to Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, spokesperson of the Springs SAPS, the man approached the driver of the Polo.

“While he was speaking to the driver, he was grabbed by two other men, one of them carrying a firearm. They took him to the guard room and tied him with cable ties.

One of the men arrested led the officers to his home where they recovered ammunition.

“The one suspect stood guard whilst the other started the trucks,” explained Tshabalala.

They made off with two trucks loaded with meat to the value of about R700 000. The trucks were a white Nissan UD with the company’s branding and registration number BZ52YMGP.

The other truck was a white Isuzu, also branded and with registration number KJK953MP. The value of the trucks is about R1600 000.

“The victim did get partial registration of the VW Polo,” he added.

The duo were detained at Alexandra SAPS and will soon appear in court.
