Fighting spirit: Chu Jin Karate Gauteng students give it their all at SA champs
The dojo congratulates the students on their achievements.
Chu Jin Karate International Gauteng, headed by renshi Nolan Basson, hosted the SA Championship this year at John Barrable Hall in Northmead, Benoni. The championship welcomed distinguished guests from Ekurhuleni and expert instructors.
Fathers and founders of Chu Jin Karate, soke Elias Jacobs from the Hunbo Dojo in Cape Town and hanshi Dave Millar from Durban, who has been practising and improving on the sport for over 50 years, were also present.
As Jacobs says, “A child in sport is a child out of court, is something we take seriously.”
According to Nalini Basson from the dojo, Chu Jin Karate Gauteng is extremely passionate about the sport and believes they are making a difference in the community by assisting in shaping the future of our youth.
“They empower them with self-defence and martial arts but also empower them by boosting their self-confidence and teaching them discipline and respect.
“Chu Jin Karate Gauteng believes these values are not only for the dojo but something to be incorporated and filter into every aspect of their lives,” said Basson.
Basson said karate clubs from all over South Africa participated. Karate instructors from the different dojos ensured their students prepared in advance.
Approximately 150 students competed in kata and kumite divisions from eight different dojos. The Gauteng dojo selected 14 students to participate and most of them participated for the first time in the SA Championships. Gauteng students received 19 medals.
“This event drew a crowd of over 350 people. The atmosphere was charged with nervous excitement, but students displayed exceptional skill, teamwork, and determination. Students kept in mind the spirit of sportsmanship and showed respect towards each other, instructors and officials,” added Basson.
The long-anticipated tournament started around 08:30 and wrapped up at 19:00.
“It was an event to remember. We thank all the supporters, especially the parents for giving their children the opportunity to practice the art of karate and supporting them in their talent.
“I congratulate all my students. Well done on your achievements. You all have represented the dojo with diligence and excellence and I am extremely proud of everyone.
“Keep up the good work. Every day is a school day. We never stop learning, so let’s keep training hard and never give up. Osu.”
