The agreement prioritises developing new and innovative ways to combat crime, disrupting criminal networks and ensuring public safety.
Tsakani – Police minister Senzo Mchunu signed the Ministerial Cooperation Agreement (MCA) at the Tsakani Stadium on Tuesday and urged the community to join him as he wages war against crime.
He also addressed various stakeholders. The agreement prioritises developing new and innovative ways to combat crime, disrupting criminal networks and ensuring public safety.
Mchunu opened his address by greeting the community while admitting crime is an ever-present challenge.
He said signing the MCA marks the start of a new chapter in collective efforts to restore peace and security in the CoE.
“As government, law enforcement and community leaders, we must take a comprehensive and multifaceted approach to fighting crime.
“Today’s signing is a powerful symbol of that commitment, an agreement that underscores the importance of collaboration, coordination and the integration of resources to address these challenges head-on,” he said.

All the signatories committed to:
• uphold the highest standard of public service and integrity;
• foster open and transparent communication;
• Sshare knowledge, expertise and resources as agreed upon;
• Respect each other’s roles, responsibilities and jurisdictions;
• Work towards finding mutually beneficial solutions in the fight against crime that serves the public interest;
• Ensure compliance with all the applicable laws, regulations and policies.
Mchunu said the latest crime statistics paint a stark picture mentioning that in the 17 Community Reported Crimes category reflected that Ekurhuleni contributed 23,7% and was the 3rd highest district in terms of crime volume.
“In terms of contact crimes, we know that areas such as Kempton Park, Benoni, Esselen Park in Tembisa, Clayville, Modderbee, Langaville and Tsakane itself are what can be termed “hotspots”.
“Pomona, Ebony, Benoni CBD, Jetpark, and again Langaville and Tsakane are hotspots when it comes to Trio crimes (carjacking, house and business robberies),” he said.

He said the MCA focuses on three critical areas – community-driven initiatives, integrating resources and innovative strategies.
“Communities are at the forefront of the fight against crime. We must strengthen CPF and promote neighbourhood safety initiatives.
“The agreement will greatly enhance support for such grassroots efforts, empowering local stakeholders to take active roles in crime prevention,” he said.
Mchunu added that the MCA would unite the various stakeholders’ abilities.
“We will ensure we are better at fighting crime with increased effectiveness and efficiency. By working together, we can create a more powerful, united presence.
“Adopting forward-thinking strategies that leverage modern technology, data-driven insights and intelligence-led policing to stay ahead of criminals is equally important,” he added.

He said the fight against crime is about enforcement and building safer communities where every individual can thrive. In closing, he thanked everyone who made the MCA a reality, saying it is not just a document but a commitment.
“It is a commitment to the people of Ekurhuleni. Let us honour it by working tirelessly to create a safer, more just society for all. Together, we will build a future where freedom and safety go hand in hand,” he concluded.
The stakeholders presented their services to the public through displays. Senior correctional officer Sello Modise explained what the different uniforms in the system mean.
“The white uniform is for the kitchen workers, orange is for adult sentenced offenders, and yellow is for attendees still going through a trial. The blue uniform is for juvenile and female offenders,” Modise said.
He said the furniture displayed on site was made and manufactured in the prison facility by the inmates under the various prison programmes offered.
