Big things around the corner for San Michele

The home for intellectually and physically disabled people has many projects and events in the works.

The San Michele Home is looking to the future with several projects in the works, an expansion of their capacity and an 80th birthday on the horizon.

Several Rotary Clubs from Germiston, Bedfordview, Johannesburg South, and their counterparts in the USA and Europe are raising funds for the home’s water purification system.

San Michele has a borehole for the times that water outages affect the centre, but has been saving for a purification system for the borehole water to be safe for consumption. The testing for this was done earlier in the year.

The home is also working with a group of businesses and individuals to fund the installation of a solar farm for the centre, and the funding of other long-term projects.

The upgrading of the home is a necessity, as the home serves intellectually and physically disabled people. The recent acquisition of 11 patients brought their total to 242 patients.

It’s not stopping there, as another 20 or so patients will arrive at the home over the next few months.

The Department of Health approached San Michele to take in these patients because of the home’s capacity and excellent management.

The home will celebrate its 80th birthday next year and hopes to hold several public events in celebration and to raise funds, including a Valentine’s event, a high tea, the second annual Mr and Ms Mental Wellness pageant, and the annual open day.

The open day for this year will be on November 2, when families of residents and members of the public can visit the home and see for themselves what the home does and how it serves its patients.

San Michele also celebrated Heritage Day on Monday, with different wards dressing up according to different cultures.
