Ermelo Road open to traffic

After months of construction, Ermelo Road is finally open.

For several months now, the prolonged closure of Ermelo Road has become a growing source of frustration for motorists.

The closure has extended beyond its original timeline, leading to significant disruptions in daily travel and local business operations.

The closure began early in July by fixing a sewer blockage. It quickly turned into upgrading infrastructure and fully repairing damage.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) assured the community they would complete the work within a few weeks. However, the timeline was repeatedly pushed back.

For months motorists were forced to take longer detours and local businesses along this road have also felt the pinch, experiencing a decline in foot traffic.

Many shop owners have voiced concerns about potential long-term impacts. Early in August, SUMP took matters into its own hands.

At the time only one side of the road was under construction, and SUMP thought it well to open up the other lane for motorists to use in the meantime.

In collaboration with TotalEnergies Dyna Tune-Up, they managed to scrape construction material out of the way and made a one-way entrance along the road. This, however, only lasted a few days before the CoE again closed the road completely.

Over the past few months, there have been weeks where there was no progress, nor any workers on site but last week the Springs Advertiser visited this section of Ermelo Road and noticed a few workers were on site along with slow progress that was made.

On Monday morning the Advertiser again paid a visit to the site, and can confirm that the road has been opened up. Expect for the sand masses covering the entire road, Ermelo Road is now open to motorists.
