Rise in stray cattle incidents poses risks to drivers

The Springs SPCA is raising urgent concerns over a troubling rise in accidents involving stray cattle on local roads, which pose serious risks to both motorists and the animals themselves.

Recent incidents have highlighted the dangers, including two tragic occurrences in just one week where vehicles struck cattle, leading to their deaths.

Annecia Morton, SPCA manager, emphasised the significant consequences these incidents can have, including property damage and injuries to drivers.

“Unfortunately, we had to euthanise one cow due to severe injuries sustained from being hit. This is never easy for us, and we are deeply saddened by the unnecessary pain caused,” she said.

The SPCA is urgently calling on livestock owners to take more responsibility for their animals.

“Stray animals on the road lead to tragic outcomes,” Annecia warned, urging farmers to ensure their cattle are properly fenced and gates secured to prevent them from wandering onto roads.

Drivers are also encouraged to stay vigilant, particularly during early morning and evening hours when visibility is lower.

If anyone spots stray cattle, they should report it to local authorities immediately to facilitate safe removal.

“Let’s work together to prevent these avoidable tragedies,” Annecia pleaded.

She further highlighted the need for all livestock owners to monitor their herds closely and ensure proper care and management.
