Letter: Metro must do more to stop carnage on our roads

Townsend Road is used as a racetrack day and night.

Cindy Grove writes by email:

With regard to the very heartbreaking story about the tragic accident that occurred in Strubenvale on Townsend Road on Friday night (Ongeluk eis kind se lewe).

I have lived on Townsend Road for the past 18 years. Let me tell you about my experience.

This road is quite long and open, with a few side roads and stop streets, ending or beginning in a cul-de-sac, whichever way you want to start.

My point is this road is used as a racetrack day and night. Cars and bikes race up and down it. Let alone the spinners.

It’s all so cool. But it’s actually not.

How many little animals get run over on this very road because they accidentally got out of their yards? It’s all so sad.

This kilometre-long road now holds two crosses of young lives lost. Two families torn apart.

Is it not time the EMPD and Ekurhuleni metro place speed humps on this road?

We need to stand together as a community. No lives should be lost. No crosses should need to be placed on the sides of any road.
