Abacus skills earn girl (7) gold at champs

Louise Lightfoot said her daughter Amoré’s gold medal at the Abacus Regional Championships is a testament to her dedication and hard work.

Amoré Lightfoot (seven) from Dal Fouche and a learner at Laerskool Selection Park recently walked away with a gold medal at the Abacus Regional Championships held in Randburg over the weekend.

The gold medal marks an impressive accomplishment in her abacus journey. Amoré began her abacus studies last September, shortly after her sixth birthday, and has been practising for just over a year.

Her mother, Louise, expressed her delight, saying, “I am very proud of Amoré. It was Amoré’s first time participating in a championship, having met the requirements as assessed by her instructor, Ruth Erasmus. Amoré has diligently attended abacus lessons every Friday after school.”

Despite taking breaks during the school holidays in December and spending a month in the Netherlands with her grandparents in June, Louise said her daughter has shown consistent progress.

Louise remarked that her daughter has received three progress reports to date, all reflecting above-average performance.

Amoré Lightfoot takes gold in the abacus competition.

“She was excited for her lessons and gave her best week after week to achieve her goal, despite having a busy schedule with school sports and other activities.”

Louise also noted that Amoré has had a keen interest in maths from a young age.

“I followed practice programmes focusing on developmental milestones from birth to age seven. That contributed to Amoré’s enthusiasm for maths.”

This interest extended to Amoré’s enjoyable maths sessions with her granddad while Louise taught swimming lessons.

“She was thrilled to showcase her achievements and see that her consistent practice had paid off,” said Louise.
