Duck pond is running dry

The Springs SPCA and local fishermen are calling for urgent intervention at the Jack Ellis Park pond in Selcourt.

The situation at the duck pond in the Selcourt enclosure has reached a critical point, with a severe lack of water posing an imminent threat to the local ecosystem.

According to Robin Windell, from a local fishing club, the pond at Jack Ellis Park is rapidly drying up.

“The diminishing water levels are causing distress among the fish, many of which are now struggling to survive in the increasingly shallow pond,” said Windell.

“This issue is particularly concerning, given the area is designated as a protected wetland, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

“Despite the presence of ducks and other bird species still inhabiting the island, the overall health of the pond is deteriorating.”

Windell said the reduced water volume is placing significant stress on the fish population, with many facing suffocation because of the lack of adequate water.

“Time is running out,” he expressed.

Springs SPCA manager Annecia Morton called for immediate action.

“We need urgent intervention to prevent a total loss of aquatic life,” she said.

Windell and club members experienced in fish care and relocation have offered their services to capture and relocate the fish to nearby dams. However, their efforts to secure permissions from the relevant authorities have so far been unsuccessful.

Windell is urging relevant authorities to act swiftly to address the water shortage and protect the wildlife.

“The pond’s condition serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining and preserving our protected wetlands.”

Morton and the anglers hope for a prompt response to safeguard the remaining ducks and fish and restore the pond to its former state. Contact Windell on 071 218 5370.
