The Springs SAPS and the Gauteng Liquor Board (GLB) recently held a significant meeting with local liquor traders and tavern owners.
The event, aimed at fostering better understanding and compliance, included a presentation of certificates as tokens of appreciation to some of the attendees.
The primary goal of the meeting was to educate liquor traders about proper business conduct and the regulations under the Gauteng Liquor Act.
Community liquor traders could voice their challenges and ask questions during the session.
Key issues addressed during the meeting included managing sound systems, operating times, discipline, and safety.
Notably, the police highlighted major concerns such as assault, including gender-based violence (GBV) and domestic violence, which are prevalent at some taverns.
Acting Operational commander Lieutenant Colonel Rajesh Ramlall emphasised the intention was not to shut down the businesses but to ensure compliance with regulations.
“Make sure you are complying with regulations. Do not put police stations in a difficult position if you are compliant,” Ramlall advised.
He stressed the significant responsibility that liquor traders have in maintaining community safety and urged them to guide their customers on proper behaviour after consuming alcohol and safety tips for walking the streets at night.
GLB client relations manager Cleo Bodibe-Lushaba recommended that traders renew their licences three months before they expire and mentioned they hold monthly workshops to educate liquor shop owners about compliance.
During the meeting, Springs police station commander Brigadier Raymond Buthelezi was introduced to the traders and owners.
He cautioned them to ensure that their establishments do not become crime scenes.
Laerskool Welgedacht Primary School SGB chairperson Vikinduku Zwane used the occasion to present appreciation certificates to owners who had donated school shoes and uniforms to learners.
A steering committee has been established to meet monthly with SAPS and GLB representatives to continue addressing these issues and enhance community safety.
