Good samaritan starts food initiative

Those who need help or who would like to donate can reach out to Melissa.

Melissa Mynhardt is a Springsite with a passion for helping people.

She is on her way to starting an initiative that helps disadvantaged residents of Springs and Brakpan. Melissa speaks about what inspired her to start the project.

“To be honest I have always loved to help others as much as I can. What put this in motion was seeing a lot of people who have been asking for help and all the nasty comments they received broke my heart.

“So I decided I want to start helping those who don’t get helped and need the help.”

Melissa says she is not part of any organisation but she is doing this out of the goodness of her heart.

“What I want is to reach families that need help. I trust that God will be pointing me in the right direction. I want to help the people on the streets as well by giving them something hot to eat or a bag of food for them.”

Melissa says she is aware that most people are sceptical when it comes to giving as there are a lot of scams out there.

“I know people want to see where it goes so I will keep a record of where the food has been donated to and how many families the donations have fed.”

She emphasises that even though she will be keeping these records, she will be keeping their identities and information safe.

“I will not be sending or posting photos of the people as they are already having a hard time. It’s hard enough for them to ask for help already.”

What Melissa needs is donations.

“It can be canned food, rice, spaghetti and more. Some families have babies who still need milk, nappies and so on, so any donations they can give will be appreciated. Like I always say, one can of food will not empty your pocket but it will fill a tummy.”

She will be opening groups for donors so she can facilitate better exchanges.

“Anyone is welcome to contact me if they are willing to help or if they need help. I will be adding them to the groups.”
