Severely burnt body discovered in cave near Bakerton Cemetery

The Springs SAPS are investigating a murder case after a body was found burnt beyond recognition near Bakerton cemetery on Saturday.

The Springs SAPS are investigating a murder case after a severely burnt body was found near Welgedacht Road, across from Bakerton Cemetery, on Saturday.

According to Springs SAPS communications officer Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, the discovery was made by children playing near the mine dump in the area.

“A police officer reported that when he arrived at the scene, he found one of the children who made the discovery accompanied by an elderly woman from Gugulethu informal settlement,” said Tshabalala.

“The young girl led him to the spot where she had found the body.

“The girl explained to the officer that while playing with a ball near the mine dump, the ball rolled into a man-made cave at the dump’s entrance.

“When she went to retrieve the ball, she saw a human head and immediately sought help from the elder.”

Tshabalala said only the upper part of the body was recognisable.

The Ekurhuleni K9 Search and Rescue was called to the scene, and a police officer entered the cave and discovered additional burned body parts.

The investigation is ongoing as police work to identify the victim and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
