Selpark school’s donation sparks hope at Leratong

Selpark Primary School’s heartfelt donation to the Leratong Place of Love Crisis Centre not only restocked supplies but rekindled hope for abused women and children seeking refuge.

A month after re-opening, the Leratong Place of Love Crisis Centre received a generous donation from Selpark Primary School as part of the school’s 67 minutes for Mandela Day.

The shelter, which supports abused women and children, had closed temporarily from May 3 to June 12 due to uncertainty over funding from the Department of Social Development.

During this period, Lerato Kamal, a social worker, explained that they had to redirect some clients to seek shelter elsewhere.

“While some found safety with family and friends, others tragically returned to their abusers. This was a painful consequence of our closure,” Kamal noted.

“We received many desperate calls daily from women needing rescue from abusive situations, but we were unable to assist.”

The visit from Selpark Primary School brought smiles and relief to the shelter’s workers.

Juanita de Canha expressed gratitude, saying, “Although we’ve received donations in the past, the school’s contribution was particularly significant. We are thankful that they remembered us on such an important day.”

Jabulile Nalana, an educator at Selpark Primary School, thanked the parents for allowing their children to contribute non-perishable food items and toiletries to a worthy cause.

“We are delighted to have chosen Leratong and for our learners to play their part in the 67 minutes for Mandela,” she said.

This donation provided much-needed supplies and renewed hope and support for the women and children relying on Leratong.
