Court gives drug dealer 10 years

A foreign national faced justice when he was sentenced to 10 years behind bars for his involvement in drug dealing.

Nweke Chinaza, a 37-year-old foreign national, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on June 21 for dealing in drugs.

Chinaza’s sentence includes a suspended portion of two years, contingent upon his conduct over the next five years under the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act.

According to Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, the communications officer of the Springs SAPS, the conviction follows an incident on January 29, 2021, when an EMPD officer acting on a tip-off intercepted Chinaza near a supermarket on Ermelo Road.

“Upon questioning, Chinaza attempted to bribe the officer with R10 000 after he was found in possession of drug-related items,” said Tshabalala.

“The officer refused the bribe and confiscated three scales, 89 small packets of drugs, and smoking pipes from Chinaza’s possession.”

Magistrate Ashwell Shaun Jacobs of the Springs Magistrate’s Court welcomed the conviction, emphasising the detrimental impact of drugs on society.

“Substances like these continue to devastate our communities, and arrests like this underscore our determination to eradicate drugs and drug dealers,” Jacobs remarked.

Jacobs highlighted the significance of the conviction in enforcing the drug laws and combatting illicit activities in the community.
