City brings together stakeholders for safety at schools

Various stakeholders were addressed on the issue of violence, drugs and healthy relationships between learners and guardians.

Safety at schools starts with healthy relations between learners and their guardians or parents at home.

This was a key theme of discussions at the Safety at Schools Dialogue held by the City of Ekurhuleni with stakeholders such as SAPS, the Gauteng Department of Basic Education, social workers and the Local Drug Action Committee members.

The dialogue was held as part of Youth Month commemorations and to promote safety at schools at Olifantsfontein Community Hall on Wednesday. Mohale Ramoshaba from the city’s Youth Desk urged parents and teachers to work with the children to eliminate school violence.

“Schools are part of society, and every member of society has a role to play. Violence in schools is a reflection of a violent society. We will work with the stakeholders until we find peace at schools,” Ramoshaba said.

The National School Safety Framework was developed by the Department of Basic Education and the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention.

With this programme, the government works with schools to ensure safe school environments for successful teaching and learning.
