Kellanova grows healthier communities

Better Days Promise is committed to advancing sustainable and equitable access to food.

Better Days Promise visited Msobomvu Primary School to help promote healthy lifestyles on May 16.

Better Days Promise by Kellanova is a global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy committed to addressing the interconnected issues of health, food, security and climate by creating Better Days for three billion people by the end of 2030.

Zandile Mposelwa, the Kellanova corporate affairs director, said this initiative benefits three schools with about 2 610 children.

“We partnered with Umsobomvu, Ntokozweni and Job Maseko primary schools and 300 households of children attending these schools.

“The schools and communities will receive 211 000 servings of vegetables from these vegetable gardens for the project’s duration.

“Kellanova further hired four community members, who take care of the school gardens and educate the community on gardening to ensure success,” she said.

The company is proud to announce the expansion of its Better Days Promise impact on communities with the launch of the Kellanova Better Days Promise Gardens in Kwa-Thema.

Mposelwa said they support a climate-positive future. These Better Days Promise Gardens need only 2l of watering daily, helping the schools and communities conserve 2.2m litres of water compared with traditional garden watering methods.

“We initiated these Better Days Promise Gardens based on the knowledge that a gardening skill will enable the schools and communities to be self-reliant and that fosters sustainable and long-term food security solutions,” added Mposelwa.

The company works with Reel Life, its implementation partner, to fulfil its desire to fight school hunger and promote long-term food security in communities by providing resources to set up gardens in school and educating school children and communities on how gardens can reduce hunger.

“Food insecurity is a severe issue in SA, where 21% of the people experience food insecurity. Reel Life cares deeply about teaching communities to grow their food and empowering themselves to make a systemic and long-term change to become food secure,” said Dineo Mahasha, the Reel Life managing director.

Philip Nieman, the general manager of Kellanova, stated that Better Days Promise specifically aims to combat hunger in the community.

“Many people are unemployed and face poverty. We have been committed to alleviating school hunger since 2014. The company has donated over 58m meals to alleviate school hunger through its school feeding programme.” he said.

Ekurhuleni MMC Sivuyile Ngodwana said Kellanova is doing an extraordinary job in the community.

“The government cannot tackle economic issues on its own. We are thankful for big companies that always interject positively into our communities.

“We are well aware of the difficulties communities face and have witnessed the reduction of hunger through Better Days Promise. We recognise the impact and shall embrace Kellanova for its exceptional work.

“The future of our children is in good hands,” said Ngodwana

School principal Mveli Mgubuli said Kellanova has boosted the learner’s confidence.

“This initiative has been doing well. We are grateful for the generosity received from Kellanova. My learners eat good, healthy food daily. Our garden is a very fruitful one and has every good vegetable needed to stimulate young minds,” said Mgubuli.
