SPCA gives animals a second chance

The Springs SPCA has taken in 37 animals after the Highveld Ridge SPCA closed its doors.

Thirty-seven pets have found their new homes at the Springs SPCA. This relocation comes after the Highveld Ridge SPCA closed its doors on March 4.

Aiming to provide a haven for the animals, the Springs SPCA took in 23 dogs and 14 cats, ensuring they receive a second chance in life.

Springs SPCA chairperson Nicky Meiring explained that the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) approached them to give the animals the loving home they deserve.

“The NSPCA had to oversee the safe relocation of all animals under the Highveld Ridge SPCA following the resignation of its management committee in February,” said Meiring.

In a statement by the Highveld Ridge SPCA, the committee requested a meeting with the NSPCA to reach common ground and seek clarity on the way forward for the facility. In the NSPCA’s view, the meeting was amicable and productive. However, the committee resigned 10 days later.

“Complicating matters, the property landlord has abruptly terminated the lease, citing construction and development plans, despite the absence of a formal lease agreement or eviction proceedings against the facility,” said Tercia Woest, the NSPCA society liaison unit manager.

Meiring said they have the capacity to shelter the new additions because each SPCA is fully trained, equipped, and ready to take in animals at any given stage.

“Being the only animal welfare organisation never to refuse admission of any animal, this adoption underscores the need for sustained community support.

“We will need a lot more help from our community to assist us with this influx of animals,” said Meiring.

She emphasised that all the animals up for adoption were once owned and are now in the care of their facility due to going astray, being unwanted or neglected.

“They, too, deserve a chance at compassion and love,” she added.
