Meet our new mascot

The plant was discovered earlier in the month.

On a sunny afternoon, Springs Advertiser editor Thelma Koorts made a discovery that would burrow into our hearts.

Growing snuggly on the building’s terrace of our office is a mielie plant that has thrived despite its unusual spot.

The plant, we assume, was just a little kernel and must have been dropped by a feathered reader, and it has since germinated.

We took to our social media platforms and were pleasantly surprised that other Springsites had also noticed our new green neighbour.

We decided to give it a name and make it our official mascot. We received a multitude of names, which made us very happy.

We realised residents are as taken with our corn friend as much as we are. We asked for a name for our leafy friend and got suggestions like Miracle Mielie, Blom, Bielie die Mielie, Rooftop Mieliekop, Addie the Mielie, and many more.

We decided to go with the name that received the most reactions and landed on Colonel Corn, a name suggested by Lizette Barnard.

Here’s to creating more memories with our residents and our new mascot.
