Charmoné’s dream sets sail

The 15-year-old had been waiting in quiet dread for five months for her ID.

What felt like the brewing of a nightmare for Charmoné Karsten has turned into a story with a happy ending.

The 15-year-old from Selection Park is heading to the Portuguese Islands with her fellow schoolmates on a tour of their school play.

The teen from Hoërskool Hugenote was facing the possibility of missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime due to administration issues from Home Affairs.

The school’s play, Tussen die Lang Grasse, won the cruise by coming in first place in a competition last year.

The family had been waiting since August for her ID, without which they could not apply for a passport.

Her parents, Marius and Brenda, could not express their happiness as they received her ID on January 18.

“The organisers gave us extra time to get her documents in order and to submit them,” said Marius.

It was a moment of laughter and happy tears when her passport arrived and it dawned on her that she could join her friends on the international trip.

Charmoné and company left Springs on February 11 and boarded the cruise ship to begin their tour on February 12.
