Mayor honours outstanding performers of matric class 2023

The ceremony was also attended by past recipients who have achieved success in their own right.

Guests were treated to the talented voices of the Springs Boys’ High School Choir as the Ekurhuleni Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana hailed the city’s cream of the crop on February 7.

The annual Godfrey Pitje Academic Excellence Awards resumed this year after being last hosted in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Germiston City Hall was a hive of activity with jubilation dominating the gathering.

The city celebrated 99 top achievers from across Ekurhuleni including the most improved schools – a category that saw some institutions leaping from a pass rate of just above 50% to over 80% in the latest matric results.

Those recognised for excellence were bestowed with certificates, trophies and laptops.

Guests were also treated to the East Rand School of Arts rendering some live musical items.

Ngodwana took the opportunity to encourage the matric class of 2023 to continue being shining stars as they pursue their studies further.

“This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter of your life. I am looking forward to experiencing how you will shake things up for our city and the greater society, making us an even better place to live, invest and play in.”

The mayor took the opportunity to encourage the youngsters to vote in the upcoming national and provincial elections so that they can shape the future of the country and have a say in how it is being led and the direction being taken by those in leadership.

“These are the gains of our democracy and you must seize the opportunity to choose the government of your choice.”

The cherry on top at the awards ceremony was the attendance by the city’s former bursary recipients who have now graduated in various fields. Some of them shared their road to becoming professionals through the assistance of the municipality.
