Gemma receives top award

The 11-year-old was inducted into the Scouts in 2019.

Gemma Coates received the Leaping Wolf award. The 11-year-old from Paul Krugers Oord received the top award for the Cubs on November 15.

The Selcourt Primary School learner was invested in the Cubs in 2019 and speaks fondly about her favourite memories as a Cub.

“Some of my favourite highlights were learning to make a cake in a tin, making homemade firelighters, cooking and hiking.

“I also enjoyed earning my badges throughout the years.

“Arkela (Gareth Langton) taught me many new things and a love for wild birds. I now really enjoy bird watching and learning about different bird species.”

Gareth, her pack Scouter, says Gemma is an inspiring and dedicated Scout.

“During Covid, she was still dedicated and a champ with all her advancement and badgework. She has worked hard since day one, and her hard work got her 28 interest badges, four paws, four animal badges, and a recruiter’s badge.

“She was a sixer leader and led her patrol to always do their best and look neat on a Friday. We wish her all the best with her new journey in Scouts,” says Gareth.

Her parents, Jonathan and Kelly, sing Gemma’s praises regarding her latest achievement.

“We are proud of Gemma and what she has accomplished throughout her years at Cubs. She is determined and enjoys hands-on activities and involvement in community projects,” they say.
