Bhairavi Sungum celebrates elderly parents

The Bhairavi Sungum of Springs celebrated senior citizens on Sunday as it hosted its 30th annual ‘Day with Our Elderly Parents'.

The Bhairavi Sungum of Springs shared kindness with Bakerton elders by hosting its 30th annual Day with Our Elderly Parents on Sunday.

The momentous event aimed to show their appreciation to all senior citizens for their contribution to the upliftment and development of their community.

Welcoming 125 elders, Poovershree Pillay, chairperson of the Sungum, said they were honoured to have reached a milestone of 30 years.

“I wouldn’t be surprised that many in attendance today once dropped off their own parents at this community centre,” said Pillay.

Shriya Naidoo, Sonali Thakor and Tiara Sana from Desi Motion Dance Academy.

“We sadly missed the last three years with you, within reason, too. In the past three years, we have lost many dear families and friends.

“It may seem that time has stood still, but we maintain, going forward, that their beautiful memory will always be etched in our hearts. We dedicate this milestone event to all of them.”

Pillay said the true measure of a caring community is how it treats its elderly, citing that she hopes they understand that they have an important role to play in their lives and society.

“We could never repay the unselfish sacrifices you made to make our lives better. We are here because of you and will always be here for you,” she concluded.
