Another sit-in currently underway at Modder East’s Gold One Mine
The miners who had reported for night duty refused to resurface this morning.
Out of frustration for Gold One Mine to set a date for the ballot, AMCU miners have carried out a second underground sit-in.
The miners, who had reported for night duty, refused to resurface this morning.
This is after the first sit-in by the mine workers over union disputes in October, which was followed by a series of protests outside the mine premises.
In one event, a car belonging to a NUM shop steward was torched by the striking miners.
On Monday a lead investigator, investigating the first sit-in, was shot and killed outside his home in the presence of his family.
In their demands, AMCU has reported to have a majority of members in comparison to NUM which is currently the union representing the miners’ rights at the mine.
They are demanding an opportunity through election to vote for a new representative union.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said there are no criminal activities reported at the mine but police are monitoring the situation.
