Geduld Methodist turns 103

The church could not celebrate its 100th birthday as it was during Covid.

It was an emotional moment as the congregants of the Geduld Methodist Church celebrated its 103rd birthday on Sunday.

The celebration, which was filled with worship and anecdotal recollections of past and present members, brought much warmth to the already hot day.

Members of the church as well as representatives of other Methodist branches were present to celebrate with the congregation.

The church’s children were also part of the celebration as they received their Sunday School lesson in a new classroom. Pastor Jonathan Coates delivered his special sermon to the awaiting ears.

“As I thought about preparing my sermon this morning, I thought about this church and this building and it reminded me of when Jesus was talking in the book of Matthew. Jesus said ‘well-done you good and faithful servants’.”

Jonathan said he could only imagine how the first congregants of the church stood in the same building and were giving thanks to God.

“They didn’t know what the future holds. They didn’t know what would happen in 103 years nor did they know the fruit the seeds would bare in that time. “

He reminisced on the times when the church had nothing and how people came together to ensure its survival.

“During Covid, I sat wondering if we would ever open our doors again but we made it and through your sacrifices saved the church.”

He said everything happens within God’s time and they must celebrate how far they have come through the years.

“This is our home, this is our place of worship and God has planted us here.”
