Register to vote in next year’s elections

Voter registration stations in all wards in Benoni will be announced on November 15 after the IEC’s briefing.

The countdown to South Africa’s 2024 national and provincial elections has begun.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) urged existing voters to update their details while encouraging first-time voters to register during the registration weekend on November 18 and 19.

Nearly 23 296 voting stations countrywide will open on these days from 8am to 5pm.

According to the IEC spokesperson, Kate Bapela, the electoral commission has expanded registration modalities to enable voters’ continuous enrolment.

“For those with internet access, registration, inspection, and updates are accessible via https://registertovote.elections.org.za. Voters may also visit local offices or capitalise on various activation campaigns to register and update their information,” said Bapela.

All South African citizens aged 16 years or older can register, but to vote, you have to be 18 years or older.

To register, you need a South African identity document – either a green barcoded ID book, an ID smartcard, or a valid temporary ID certificate.

You must also provide an address or description of where you live so that the IEC can place you in the correct ward and voting district. The IEC needs no proof of address.

Meanwhile, you can register to vote or check and update your registration address, in one of three ways until the proclamation of the 2024 Elections:

1. Online at registertovote.elections.org.za
2. At the voting station in your voting district
3. At your local IEC office on weekdays during office hours. Find local office details at www.elections.org.za/pw/About-Us/Find-IEC-Local-Offices

It IEC will announce voter registration stations in all wards in Benoni on November 15 after their briefing.
