WATCH: Schools called on to be more inclusive

The planned march in the CBD was canceled on account of weather.

Ekurhuleni’s Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture hosted a Pride Month commemoration at Ken Gampu Theatre.

The event was hosted in partnership with the GDE’s Gauteng East District on Tuesday.

Mamiki Sibeko, values in education coordinator, said the aim of the event is to empower invited learners and make them agents of change in their schools.

“We are promoting rights-based, socially cohesive and inclusive schools. We want all our schools to be inclusive of all people, from all walks of life.

“We must ensure that all schools, and school communities, know, respect, protect and promote children’s rights to education,” she said.

Sibeko encouraged the learners to be active bystanders.

“You are human rights ambassadors. You need to advocate for the rights of others, but first you have to know those rights,” she added.

According to the Constitution:

The state may not unfairly discriminate directly or indirectly against anyone on one or more grounds, including race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language and birth.

The learners received a simplified version of the Constitution for them to understand their rights and the rights of others.

Learners from the twenty schools invited also took time to share their experiences about the challenges of LGBTIQA+ youth in their communities.

Manager of the Ken Gampu Theatre, Zwelibanzi Sibiya, encouraged young creatives to submit shows that are inclusive of LGBTIQA+ to him.

“The truth is, everyone wants to see themselves represented. And although we have seen some shows on TV that include the LGBTIQA+, we have not seen much in the theatres. So my door is open,” he said.
