Monument to be restored

The restored site will be called the Morgan Moth Monument and Park.

The Obelisk War Monument Memorial was selected as the next site to be restored. The monument, erected by Geduld Gold Mine in the early 1920s, was placed to honour those who fought in WWI and never returned.

Morgan Beef’s CEO Rikus Myburgh adopted the monument on Plantation and Abattoir roads.
Passionate Springsite Tony da Cruz talks about the site and its plans.

“I approached Rikus and asked him to adopt the space, and he readily agreed. He understands the importance of having a nice, clean and beautiful display overlooking his abattoir.

“The location is unique as it boasts two monuments – the Geduld Mine Great War Memorial and the Mudhook Moth Memorial Wall,” he said.

Da Cruz said that extensive damage meant they could not save the hall.

“We will demolish the hall because it is beyond repair. We have commissioned a local small business to take on the project of bringing the building down,” he said.

Alan Selkon, the CEO of Price Paints, offered to donate a professional restoration of the two memorials at the site.

“We thank him and his wife, Cindy, for their support in restoring dignity to our Springs military heritage sites,” said Da Cruz.

The plans for the space are to turn it into a memorial site and open park for the community to enjoy.

“We are keeping the floor of the demolished building to serve as a stage for the community to use as a space for concerts and other entertainment,” added Da Cruz.

The restored site will be called the Morgan Moth Monument and Park.
