Fifteen arrests at Gold One Mine

The Gold One Mine workers had been underground since Sunday.

Police are investigating a case of kidnapping and assault after the now-contained situation at East Modder’s Gold One Mine.

Fifteen mineworkers were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly holding several miners against their will.

Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said some mineworkers who detectives interviewed after they surfaced confirmed they were held against their will by the group.

The total number of those held against their will, including a security guard and paramedics, was 562.

Muridili said four injured men, including a security officer, were taken to hospital.

“Police seized sticks and screwdrivers found in the lift by Gold One Mine’s security,” said Muridili.

All the miners who had been underground since Sunday resurfaced yesterday afternoon.
