A local businessman has a dream of a cleaner environment

Ettiene, his family and members of the Geduld CPF group joined hands to clean Frikkie Deysel Park.

Geduld resident and local businessman Ettiene Fourie has made it his mission to restore Frikkie Deysel Park.

The park, which is conveniently situated near old age homes and schools, has deteriorated and left in a state of disrepute.

Ettienne says he has big dreams for the once-beloved park as it’s a place they hold close to their hearts.

“My heart breaks at the state of that park, so I have taken it upon myself to restore it.”

Ettiene, his family, and CPF members have started to clean the area.

“Some of the removal requires bigger efforts and mechanical help like a TLB to remove the debris in the dam.”

One-hundred-and-forty-five black refuse bags were collected during the first cleanup.

Ettiene says he isn’t doing all of this for the glory or any credit, but he has a genuine passion for children and the elderly.

“I want a safe and beautiful space for the children of Springs and the elderly to visit without feeling unsafe or stepping on a used needle.”

He says he has plans to turn the park into a petting zoo and a place where people can gather and socialise.

“I have a big dream for the park. I want to turn it into an educational experience for children from disadvantaged homes.

One-hundred-and-forty-five black refuse bags were collected after the cleanup.

“I understand that some of them will never know the feeling of being at the zoo, so I want to give it to them.”

He also shares his dreams for the elderly.

“It pains me to know that the surrounding old age homes are subjected to such a view. The rest of the homes are walled off so the elderly residents won’t have the joy of seeing the beautiful view from their homes once it is complete, but they can at least visit.”

Ettiene plans to have the restoration complete in time for Christmas.

“I need the support of Springsites and local businesses to help make this a reality.”

Christmas in the park

In anticipation of the park’s restoration and grand opening, Ettiene is running a Christmas toy drive. The toys collected will be wrapped and gifted to underprivileged children.

“The toys can be pre-loved or new, as long as they are still in good condition. We will also be accepting donations for books.”

There is also a collection for goodies to make party packs.

“We want to gift the children with delicious goodies to go with the presents.”

The donations can be dropped off at Authentikink Cafe on 53 Rhodes Street, Geduld Extension.
